At our college campus we installed Packet Shaper and are satisfied. We
also are planning to implement a content filtering mechanism to prevent
access to porn/casino/etc web sites. The mechanism should be able to update
the list of domainnames/IP's automatically.

Is there any survey we can access about the alternatives ?
Has anyone implemented anything successfully ?

Regards.

Here at Harding we use Websense. I have to admit Websense is a little high,
but well worth the money. We were using cyberpatrol and did not like the
lack of granularity it had. I have not used Cyberpatrol in several years it
may be a lot better now than it was when we used it last. Websense is
running on a separate server in conjunction with our Cisco Pix firewalls.
We have had very little trouble out of it. The built in reporting tools are
just wonderful.

We have been using Novell Bordermanager with CyberPatrol to filter web
access. We have been pleased with the results. On our firewall we
block access to port 80 and other common proxy server ports, so web
access is forced through our proxy servers. That way we have a log of
all sites visited based on username, as well as a mechanism to block any
sites our Student Services staff deems inappropriate. We also run a
periodic check through the logs for keywords to catch users who made a
lot of attempts to go to forbidden sites. Blocking port 80 has also
helped us reduce tunneling problems.

Subject: web monitoring and management

Colleagues,

As a new Campus Manager user, Everett has encouraged me to use this medium
to get a question answered.

What product(s) do you use to monitor and/or manage access to web traffic? I
know that Suffield uses Vericept and that NMH has a home-grown amalgam of
free ware, shareware and scripting. The Dartmouth Medical School uses
SurfControl. We have neither the time nor the skills to replicate the NMH
approach and are looking for alternatives.

Thanks,

Dan
